Barring any major problems, the city plans to invest $4.3 over the next three years to install more than a dozen cameras like the one now at 66th Avenue and San Leandro Boulevard so it can redeploy police officers to other duties.
An Arizona company, Redflex Traffic Systems, is putting the money out upfront in exchange for a slice of the traffic fines its equipment generates.
The city will start issuing citations based on the camera images on Sept. 26.
