Two close friends of mine, one owns a 2002 C230K & one owns the 2002 S40, are both very happy with their vehicles. I was with them when they initially test drove the cars, up to their ultimate purchase.

The Volvo did not impress as much as I would have expected, in my opinion. Engine noise is significant compared to the C230K, especially when the turbo is called upon. Also, the S40's exterior finish is a bit disappointing for a car in its class. The seams between the trunk and the tail lights are significantly unveven from left to right. In terms of reliability, the Volvo has been trouble free and has served his family's purpose.

As for the C230K, I found that engine noise was less significant in the cabin. The car is also "cleaner," with all seams quite even throughout. Unfortunately, the car does lack the S40's 4 -door versatility.
