NAH, I still want to go the pillar pod route.

In the thumbnail below you can see my Wood is already gone in the area where I would put the Gauges. You can also see a slot where the wires could pass through.
I was not thinking of Drilling holes; I was thinking of getting a nice piece of hard Wood and Hole Sawing the holes in the Wood for the Gauges and mounting the Wood with 2 screws through that spot.
The Wood could be glued together to make it thicker and stained and contoured to make it look nice.
I think there is room for four 2 inch gauges.
