Diesel911 is correct in the overall answer..
but lets tweak it some... the dryer needs to be replaced anytime the system is opened up because its function is to trap moisture in the silica jell which is under oil in its sump. It does not rust and I only make that distinction so that new people will not think " it has not been opened up LONG enough to rust" and think they do not need to replace it.. once that moisture collecting stuff is saturated it can not be rejunvinated except by taking it out of the container...
Moisture is a real enemy of the system because it combines with the refrigerant to make acids which attack the inside of the tubes....which can make flakes of metal come off into the refrigerant stream and clog the working parts of the system.. the hole in the TXvalve being a prime example...nothing works if that is plugged...
So actual water in there is not the problem.. it is what happens to it and then what that does to something else.... So you can get the system working sometimes doing it half way... but you will suffer at some point... sooner or later.... and not save on the overall situation long range...
There are huge numbers of threads on exactly this question... so you need to do lots of searching and reading... THEN if you have specific questions ask them...
The answers in those threads had the benefit of lasting long enough for lots of smart people to stop by and post their input... then others stop by and tweak those answers...
