Question Help! What is this part called?

Hi everyone.
This is on a 1980 300TD (naturally asperated).

Yesterday while driving in town my temperature started rising fast. I pulled over and coolant was spewing out from some seal under the part in the picture (the detail shot shows the leak pretty well).

What is it this part called? I assume it has to do with climate control. I had turned on the "bi-level" blower (which I rarely, if ever, do) shortly before I saw my temp starting to rise.

Also, please feel free to share advice on how to fix it because I don't know that either . Is there a gasket that I can replace? or do I need to replace the whole part?

Or I was hoping that maybe if I filled the coolant back up and turned the blower off, then coolant would stop flowing through this part and thus stop shooting out all over the place. Or maybe that's wishful thinking...

Thanks!
Christine
