Question Help! What is this part called?

Hi everyone.
This is on a 1980 300TD (naturally asperated).

Yesterday while driving in town my temperature started rising fast. I pulled over and coolant was spewing out from some seal under the part in the picture (the detail shot shows the leak pretty well).

What is it this part called? I assume it has to do with climate control. I had turned on the "bi-level" blower (which I rarely, if ever, do) shortly before I saw my temp starting to rise.

Also, please feel free to share advice on how to fix it because I don't know that either . Is there a gasket that I can replace? or do I need to replace the whole part?

Or I was hoping that maybe if I filled the coolant back up and turned the blower off, then coolant would stop flowing through this part and thus stop shooting out all over the place. Or maybe that's wishful thinking...

Thanks!
Christine

Agreed!

That is the climate control system for the car, very troublesome, and very expensive....

Yup. I finally found a post with pictures that told me it was the evil servo. It also had a great tutorial on bypassing it altogether and a diagram that helped a lot.

In the meantime, was I correct in thinking that if I turn the heat off my leak will go away? A temporary solution but it would be really convenient.

Other thoughts on how to get back on the road as soon asn easily as I can?
thanks again.

Thanks

The leak is coming from the box itself. It looks like there is a top part and a smaller squarish bottom part and the leak is where they meet It's not from any of the hoses.

Appears to be part #143, circulation pump valve, #149 is a repair kit.
Or an A/C servo, neither of which I can find at my usual parts place.
However the listed A/C servo at Performance Products is priced at $2013, YIKES!
Good luck, the dealer may be the place to see about that repair kit.

Thumbs up fixing problem temporaly

go to napa auto parts and tell them you want a manual heater valve the kind that is put between heater hoses, should come witha a maual cable that will open and shut your heater valve to allow heat to come into the car from a manual cable. then just bypass servo for the winter, there is and after market kit made to do away with servo , it does cost around 650.00 dollars and is made by Innovative Electronics

UnwiredTools™ ACCII Upgrade Kit. Other then that depends on how much money you want to spend, if the car is just a beater and you don't want to put that kind of money into it then go the manual heater valve route, it will just give you heat , you will still have no Air conditioning, good luck

Thanks pop & blow! I'll do that this weekend.
AC doesn't work anyway.

I've read a few post with detailed instructions on bypassing the servo and it looks easy enough.

...Every so often I have a traumatic event with this car and I think "Grrrr! I'm sending her to the junk yard this time!" But it always turns out that there is a fairly simple fix and she's back on the road again

Thanks everyone

I have a spare one. Condition, not sure because I removed it and stored it two years ago. Will check it out if you are interested.

Same here, I have a good one that was installed in a car for a year then replaced along with the entire rest of the system. also a short pipe and a heater valve from a 190 works great in its place.

Update and Thanks Shopforum!

So just to update... I bypassed the servo today and no leaks and no overheating.Yay!

Added Bonus #1: The heat has never ever blown like this! It's such a luxury!
Added Bonus #2: It eliminated my vacuum problem-- the car now shuts off even if I have the blower on.

It was a little tricky getting the new hoses and the valve to fit around the servo without twisting and kinking but eventually I got it worked out. Otherwise, the hardest part of this project was getting the valve. Advanced Auto and another big autoparts store are in walking distance to me, but none of the counter people could find the part unless I gave them the year, make and model of the car it was originally designed for. Ended up getting a ride out to Napa for it.

Thanks for the help everyone. So glad to be back on the road again.

They don't call it Dr. Evil Servo for nuthin'.........

BTW, nice looking wagon. I loved my '80 300TD. It was a very rare Climate Contol III, obviously a late production 1980.
Take somebody up on their working used Evil Servo. It is still nice to have a working system.

Recently a local MB dealer parts guy told me MB actually has a $500-kit to do away the the evil servo as well. He also said they don't push it much as it is an admission of MB's big mistake.
