Unfortunately Mechanics like to scare people into having work done. If you can it is best to find out if what the mechanic said was true.

It is not too difficult to get some idea what is going on with your Camshaft Timing/Timing Chain Stretch.
The below pic on the left of the pic is the Camshaft Gear Timing mark aligned with the Camshaft Bearing Tower Timing Mark. On the compression stroke.
On the right of the pic is my Crankshaft Damper and the Pointer showing about 2-1/2 degrees of late Camshaft Timing (due to Timing Chain Stretch and wear on the Timing Gears).
They make an offset Woodruff Key for Engines that have 4 degrees and several degrees above that.
