Sure, I pulled it first. It shouldn't be larger out front. You could never get it on if it was. After removing the keeper, I'd try to file the head down on that mushroom. The plastic piece will be easier to get off.

Don't pry against the plastic piece. You don't need it breaking. It's probably not an easy piece to replace.
