My plan was to stick to my 300SD but my dream car is a fintail wagon and I have been wanting one for years. I told myself that if I ever found one I could afford that I would buy it no matter what the condition.
I think the fact that I own my two dream cars is pretty amazing. There aren't any other cars in the world that I would want more than my two cars, except maybe for identical ones in better condition. I don't plan on selling either of my cars and intend to keep them for life.
If I have to transplant the wagon parts onto a less rusty sedan, so be it. I've done lots of things other people thought were impossible and it has been done before, both installing a turbo diesel engine into a W110/W111 (I've done it before in a 1967 230S) and transplanting the wagon-specific sheet metal onto a sedan (Bob Gunthorp did this from a 1967 230S wagon onto a 1961 220SE sedan).
My 200D is practically rust-free other than the taillight panel (which I would be cutting out), some firewall rust-through, and rusty rockers and floors, of which I already have a set of replacement rocker panels. So I might transplant the wagon sheet metal onto the 200D. Then again, I could make it into a W111 wagon if I found a W111 sedan...
Other than getting the proper welding equipment, knowledge, and practice, it's all time, and for the measly income I have, I come out ahead by doing things myself rather than paying someone else to do things.

Having a good plan & knowing how to follow it through , is a very good thing indeed .
I eagerly await the pix as you get this done . these wagons are sweet , not for me but very nice .
I see you're another W-116 lover , I know several .
For me , the W-123 Diesel Coupe is the end all , be all vehicle .
