That's an early Dutch plate number and the rear lights are out of a Citroen GS. I even wonder if the rear windshield area is made of a modified Citroen DS front windshield frame.

The tail reminds me of some of those Russian cars which were sort of rip offs of fifties American cars.

Your 5 cyl diesel will fit because it's a 230. The radiator is already moved forward and it has an overflow tank, ala 230SL.
My advice, forget it and buy a W124 wagon. Much more modern and comfortable. No rut either.

hA ha Warren,if we did that the world would be dull boring place. Besides a W124 wagon ain't worth anything these days where a universal ,no matter how rough,is always sort after.
The last time I saw one for sale, it sold for 7000 Euro,which is roughly $14,000 Australian. lets see anyone get that much for a 124 wagon. And there is this scruffy example for 18,000 euro. |

My interest starts to drop after the W123 body style, though they did make plenty of W123 wagons.
My plan was to stick to my 300SD but my dream car is a fintail wagon and I have been wanting one for years. I told myself that if I ever found one I could afford that I would buy it no matter what the condition. I think the fact that I own my two dream cars is pretty amazing. There aren't any other cars in the world that I would want more than my two cars, except maybe for identical ones in better condition. I don't plan on selling either of my cars and intend to keep them for life. If I have to transplant the wagon parts onto a less rusty sedan, so be it. I've done lots of things other people thought were impossible and it has been done before, both installing a turbo diesel engine into a W110/W111 (I've done it before in a 1967 230S) and transplanting the wagon-specific sheet metal onto a sedan (Bob Gunthorp did this from a 1967 230S wagon onto a 1961 220SE sedan). My 200D is practically rust-free other than the taillight panel (which I would be cutting out), some firewall rust-through, and rusty rockers and floors, of which I already have a set of replacement rocker panels. So I might transplant the wagon sheet metal onto the 200D. Then again, I could make it into a W111 wagon if I found a W111 sedan... Other than getting the proper welding equipment, knowledge, and practice, it's all time, and for the measly income I have, I come out ahead by doing things myself rather than paying someone else to do things.

I already did the turbo diesel conversion on a 1967 W111 230S I used to have but the car was rusty like this wagon and so I pulled the good parts and scrapped the shell. Besides retaining the 5 cylinder diesel engine and other parts, I have retained the knowledge of how to make it work. I wish I had kept the factory undershields! I had one for the oil pan, fuel lines, and differential. I plan for this to be a really long-term project because I have to focus on getting my 300SD reliable and looking good (the black paint which is not the original color is bubbling and the clear coat is coming off in sheets). But in the meantime I won't let it rust away. I'm going to be treating the rusty spots on the wagon-specific metal with Rust Doctor so the rust doesn't keep spreading and doing what I can to preserve it in the meantime. If fintail wagons were plentiful it wouldn't make sense to put so much effort into this one, but they are exceedingly rare and I thought I would never have a chance to own one. Well, for at least under $20,000. My friend has a W123 300CD coupe. I typically prefer 4 door sedans and wagons, but the Mercedes coupes have a really nice window line to them.

Just so ;
I find the rather conservative lines of the W-123 Coupe very pleasing to these old eyes and simply put , they're the best drivers , hands down . My W-123 sedan cannot keep up nor can W-116's nor my brother's cherry W-126 SD . I *so* wish I'd made a W-107 into a turbo diesel , that would have been great . I drive a lot , 800 + miles a week , plus more when I'm on vacation so how it runs & drive is far more important to me than how it looks . The mercedes w-123 Coupe gives me the best of both worlds , as your W111 Fintail Wagon will for you ! .

re diesel W107's
i was aked by a guy in India about a 107 SL he wanted to buy. The seller was asking $12000 USD for it. he sent me pics and it was really rough,not even worth using as parts donor but what was really interesting was the OM615 200 diesel in it...
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() India has a lot of interesting Mercedes,especially prewar examples but you can't take them pout of the country because their laws forbid the export of national treasures.. which includes old cars. |
