The more that I have thought about it, the more I am leaning toward finding a non-rusty W111 sedan with sunroof and maybe a fried interior and bad engine to help keep down the price. I think the wagon would look nice with the longer front end of the W111 and the additional sunroof, with a roof rack on top. And a turbo diesel engine, of course, while retaining the 4 speed column shift.
I already did the turbo diesel conversion on a 1967 W111 230S I used to have but the car was rusty like this wagon and so I pulled the good parts and scrapped the shell. Besides retaining the 5 cylinder diesel engine and other parts, I have retained the knowledge of how to make it work. I wish I had kept the factory undershields! I had one for the oil pan, fuel lines, and differential.
I plan for this to be a really long-term project because I have to focus on getting my 300SD reliable and looking good (the black paint which is not the original color is bubbling and the clear coat is coming off in sheets). But in the meantime I won't let it rust away. I'm going to be treating the rusty spots on the wagon-specific metal with Rust Doctor so the rust doesn't keep spreading and doing what I can to preserve it in the meantime.
If fintail wagons were plentiful it wouldn't make sense to put so much effort into this one, but they are exceedingly rare and I thought I would never have a chance to own one. Well, for at least under $20,000.
My friend has a W123 300CD coupe. I typically prefer 4 door sedans and wagons, but the Mercedes coupes have a really nice window line to them.
