I have seen a lot of these in use. Almost all light aircraft engines use them.

The only bad thing about them is they only collect magnetic metals. Bronze and other non-magnetics still collect in the bottom of your oil pan, and after 200,000 miles you can drop the pan and it feels like sand in the bottom of it.

Still, anything that can trap metal particles is a good thing to have in place.
