Magnetic Transmission Filters?
Anyone else tried these?
http://www.emergingent.com/subpage1Magnefine.htm They even sell them at NAPA. I picked one up (around $20) and installed it on the return hose from the tranny cooler. In 200 miles, made a noticeable difference in the appearance of the fluid, and the amount of crud I could wipe off the tranny dipstick with my fingers. My CRD friend in Charlotte went one step further, and tried "polishing" the fluid in the same manner he read about on one of the truck forums - He rigged up a filter head with a Caterpillar 2 micron spin-on fuel filter, hooked it into the return hose from the tranny cooler, and then ran his vehicle at idle for upwards of an hour to circulate the tranny fluid thru the filter. This along with having one of the Magnefine filters installed as well. Says when he did a UOA on the tranny fluid, the insolubles and metals were so low that Blackstone simply listed them as "trace" - so low they weren't measurable with their methods.

Any way to Filter Fluids(That Doesn't CUT Flow rate)
Is Good.
Mercedes uses a PS Filter inside the Reservoir.Ford uses an Inline PS filter. Everyone uses a Transmission filter in the Pan. (SOME use a Magnet in the Pan in addition to the in Pan filter) Your Wallet,Your Mercedes,Your Pleasure. [What the Heck was it Samuel Clemons said?]

Magnets in the bottom of the pan do the same thing. Just clean them off every 10 years.

Every oil change (3K), I'd be picking the lil' bits from the magnet. When I'd change the tranny fluid, same thing...pick the bits, reinsert and drive on. So it bears the asking...Why don't we have this available for all our vehicles?

I have seen a lot of these in use. Almost all light aircraft engines use them.
The only bad thing about them is they only collect magnetic metals. Bronze and other non-magnetics still collect in the bottom of your oil pan, and after 200,000 miles you can drop the pan and it feels like sand in the bottom of it. Still, anything that can trap metal particles is a good thing to have in place. |

Mercedes has transmission pan magnets for the electronicly controlled slushboxes. Non magnetics aren't much of an issue but magnetics can futz up the internal speed sensors.
