Actually, according to BANKS and others in the diesel community, most diesels are staged at the mid to low end of their capability.
As long as boost is increased in porportion to fuel the engine will live for a long time. First thing is not incresing fuel its a pyrometer, boost gauge, and fuel gauge to see what is happening internally. And Larry is right in that excessive heat will limit life, but a healthy fuel/air ratio should get you the power want.
