I noticed as i had the W210 on the lift and had a tire off that the plastic shields under wheel wells to keep debris from flying up there were still nice and tight. I pulled it off and there was tons of wet dirt / sand / leaf mixture in there that i cleaned out. I wonder if that contributes to the rust, lots of underbody panels you need to clean out every now and then.

I'll post some pics of mine when I investigate for rust. I didn't see any off hand.
I'm not sure if the OM648 is fitted to the sprinter - according to wikipedia the OM642 (a V6 instead of a straight 6) is fitted.
