Thanks to everyone for your replies.
I did some more measuring after reading your posts. Referencing the pdf document that Army suggested (posted by lutzTD), it seems as though the short shaft maybe from a 300CD/280CE and the long shaft from a 240D (hopefully mated to an early style iron box 4 spd transmission).
