OK, that link pretty much settles it Thanks!
I managed to find the original SD's oil canister in the messy garage and I think I can make it work again. Sure is quite a bit slimmer than the W123 style one.

Yep, you got that right - I am quite certain that the closest Pick'n'pull yard with a pre-86 SD on it lies on the U.S. East cost. For one thing, there are only a handful of OM617 SDs here in Finland (If I had to put a number on it, I'd say 10) and the situation is similar elsewhere in Europe, I imagine. But luckily there is this forum as well as ebay thru which to obtain SD-specific parts (as the stealership is often not an option for me).


PS. On the lower portion of the oil canister there are spring loaded black plastic spindles - anybody know what those are there for? Something to do with evening out the oil flow...or...? There's total of two spindles and on mine, one of them has couple of broken wings. Didn't look into this for very much yet, but can those spindles be changed out easily?
