Actually they should be pretty close, both should be SFI M104 motors, the 94 would I believe be HFM or possibly LH-SFI (essentially the same except the MAF, hot film vs hot wire). I think the 97 would be ME which is similar to HFM except ME has the ignition integrated in to the ECM.
Definitely the same engine though, M104 engines, 1998 was the first year for the M112 V6
