97 E320 stall... need help...

My 17 yr old son hit a Bambi and wiped out his '78 300D.....So he now has a 97E320 (a little bit better acceleration than the 300D).

When the engine is cold it starts, surges and stalls like someone tuned off the ignition. It will keep doing this until up to temp (60-80C) and then run smooth for the most part but has stalled a few times at temp while idling. smooth acceleration and lots of power.

- No codes
- Have installed a new Crank Position Sensor
- cleaned MAF
- found a blockage in EGR vacuum line and fixed
- Cleaned throttle motor interior (it has been replaced before I got the car)
- New batteries in key fob

Could a malfunctioning coolant temp sensor cause this problem? Would like to diagnose if possible before throwing money at it.

Could be a rotten engine wiring harness, or just lack of maintenance, any idea when it last got plugs and filters?

Engine temp sensor easy enough to check with a scanner, probably easiest to check it first thing in the morning before starting it, after sitting overnight should read close to ambient air temp.

Pull the plate off that goes over the valve cover (spark plug cover) to see if any of the plug holes is filled with oil. although come to think of it that should give a misfire code and you say no codes.

Check for codes even without a CEL.

I get no codes. I have had the car about 2 weeks. Will change plugs. Since it is temp related I'm going the route of the coolant temp sensor. I can only find one on the engine on the thermostat housing, a 2 prong. All other parts sites show a two prong but Peach parts shows a 4 prong and that I need 2 of them. Looked again last night and did not find them. Any ideas on where to look? Maybe on the block underneath the intake manifold..?

I have a 94 e320 donor car (another bambi hit) and it does not have the same sensors as the 97.

The 94 is an entirely different engine and fuel system than the 97, I doubt much of anything will interchange.

Actually they should be pretty close, both should be SFI M104 motors, the 94 would I believe be HFM or possibly LH-SFI (essentially the same except the MAF, hot film vs hot wire). I think the 97 would be ME which is similar to HFM except ME has the ignition integrated in to the ECM.

Definitely the same engine though, M104 engines, 1998 was the first year for the M112 V6

Looks like the same engine to me but the electronics are different, different MAF, IAC etc.

Can anyone tell me where the 4 prong coolant temperature sensor is located? 2 prong on the thermostat housing easy to find but I cannot locate the 4 prong that the new parts section says my motor has (qty 2)

Cold start problem is back......

Now that it is getting cooler the 97 e320 still has problems running till the engine gets warmed up then runs fine. One cold morning it would run and then act like someone shut the key off but before it stopped completely it would rev back up...we warmed up the crank position sensor with a hair dryer and it ran perfectly. I installed a new crank sensor and it still has the cold start/run problem. No codes. Temp sensor (Inlet air and coolant) are reading normally

dash code says something about battery charge but the alternator was tested and OK and we have a new battery (which we had tested an ok).

Any ideas on what to check???

And more problems today...

My son was driving the car today and said it would lose power while driving with rpms dropping off and the antilock brakes self applying (this is what he said...) then it would return to normal for a while and then do the same. I think it is kicking into limp mode for some reason. I started the car no problem today and then 2 hours later he went to start it and it took 5 minutes to finally get it running. Again no codes. Maybe a knock sensor??????

Sounds more like the throttle actuator to me.
