Well I wouldn't write off your plans just yet.

Sure someone else has made a mess - but it ain't over till the fat lady sings. Those nuts are quite brittle and in a weird way quite soft. If you have one of those hobby drill / grinder things (dremel) then erode the nut away so that you are essentially splitting it in two. If you made a purchase point for a chisel or punch you can probably hammer it off.
