Just removed my fan and viscous clutch from my 85 300D. There's so much more room in there now! I can feel the extra power w/o the drag of the fan and it's quieter! The real reason I removed it is to track down my low mpg. I don't think my fan clutch is releasing and the fan is always engaged. Is it possible to test the clutch on the bench?

I have a manual switch to control the AC aux fan but there was no need to turn it on yesterday (around 39 F ambient) when I was stuck at stop lights in mile long slow moving heavy city traffic.....the temp gauge stayed between 81 to 84 C without the engine cooling fan. I would like to automate the AC electric fan for the warmer months though.

Do you know where I can find a 100 C temp switch that would fit in the T stat housing? I found a post on Benzworld on gasser coolant temp switches Coolant temp sensor - Mercedes-Benz Forum . Do you know if the any of the ones mentioned will fit?
