I only have FSM 's for 615,616,617na,617 turbo.... MB is different from all the old American engines I had experience with when I arrived at this forum... I made some mistakes assuming things before I got my FSM's....
You have a really really old engine... so I suggest you look for a FSM for it.. and/or some old mechanic who can guide you on this procedure.
If you are putting this engine together from the bare ground up.. IF you wanted to you might could install a chain with NO master link... as our engines are assembled at the factory.
My opinion is that would be slightly OCD... but I am not against ' OCD' in search of long lasting reliability.
I think you should start a NEW thread with a catchy title .... directly pointed at this problem...
might attract the person with the information you need .....
