That western holly likely does have asbestos insulation. When I do stoves with asbestos, I try to either leave it alone, (no better insulation out there,). If I have to remove it, I just spray it down with soapy water and wear gloves.
That stove would fetch eye watering money when restored, but my restoration quote will certainly make you cry.

I'd keep it. My grandmother taught me to cook on it. I've sent pics to a guy who does restoration in Tucson, he says he'll have to see it in the flesh to give me a quote but said it would likely be a few thousand dollars. I may just let the mice keep it, or see what it's worth as is. SWMBO would never agree to that kind of money on a stove. I had to beg for 1500 for a stove for the bunkhouse kitchen.
