As far as I know, the check engine light is not on. Again, when I get home, I'll double-check to make certain but im relatively sure it isn't. After I posted this thread last night, I went back to scour the web and found that these engines (M113 E50?) have recurring issues with lifter clatter. I'm assuming that one of the lifters on the the driver's side of the engine is out of spec and needs replacing. But I guess I won't know for sure until I take the valve cover off and poke around inside.
