This is an interesting point. The 4sp tranny's are cheap and readily available versus the 5sp which are very rare. The OPer's car is an 85' which means it has the one year 2.88 diff which is an excellent start.

I never use 5th gear except on freeways, it cruises nicely at 2400 rpm's but 2800 wouldn't be that bad.
