There were a variety of significant changes made to W123 diesel vehicles beginning with model year 1983. On my 1983, I never encountered springs as you describe them and have never read of or heard others reference such springs. Unless you come across springs in the process of looking at the applicable parts diagrams, I would doubt their existence.
