Both filters are in the same canister -- the mesh do-dad on top is the main filter, removes big crud from the oil on the way to the bearings. The paper filter is the bypass filter, empties directly into the pan via a calibrated orifice in the top of the filter housing. Also, there is a thermostat and the pressure relief for the oil pump in there, I think. For sure the oil cooler thermostat.

I'd leave it alone and put up with the mess, its easier.
