I use (after reading a lot of postings on this list) a sheepskin mitt for washing my car (89 300E).

I found a 3-pack of them at Costco/Price Club for $7!! I couldn't believe the low price so I bought 2 packages (I won't ever run out now!!!)

Works great and is gentle on the finish.
