If I recall correctly..

Vibration that cannot be traced back to motor or tires.
A pronounced clunk when shifting from reverse to drive.

From what I understand the best defense is to check it ocassionally. When you get your tires rotated just get under it and check it out. Its fairly easy to see. If you have cracks.. replace them. There is one on each side of the driveshaft. Tranny and Diff. I also think others have said the front one is the one that fails the most often. Perhaps the stress is higher on that end.
