The gearing being described sounds very much like my 240D 5 Euro 5 speed. Unfortunately, with no tach, I'm really just guessing, but the RPMs sound about right by comparison with my 300D auto which does have a tach. The 5 speed 240D cruises along nicely in 5th at freeway speed, but it is necessary to drop to 4th when much of an uphill grade is encountered. Around town, it never gets to 5th gear, usually it's in 3rd or 4th. By comparison,my old 115 240D 4 speed was really wound up at freeway speed (felt like about 4000RPM at 75 MPH).
Hope this helps. I would say go for it and just drive it in a lower gear as needed.
