Allow me to suggest a correction here. PayPal is there to make PayPal and eBay money, and that's that. I hardly consider them to be a benevolent protector of sellers.

As a buyer, I don't count on them to defend me. As a seller, I don't count on them to defend me. The only time I expect them to act in my best interests is when that happens to coincide with their best interests.

That said, I haven't personally had any problems with them, but I think that's largely because, out of several hundred transactions, I have yet to have a really problematic one where either party turned to PayPal for help. I also haven't had the misfortune of getting hit by a "chargeback scammer" yet. It would appear that the sort of stuff I sell doesn't have that much appeal to scammers. Knock on wood...
