I've never had trouble with this as long as I filled with the engine running.

If you still have trouble, some thermostat housings have a bleed screw on them, but I think I've seen that on the 124 gas engines not diesels. Failing that, you can just crack the hose a little near the thermostat housing and see if you can bleed it a little.
