That's actually a very good sign that the heater electric dial knob light is out..... I'd start with checking the switch before attacking the fan motor. Rule on Vintaqe MB electric switches, signal switches, instrument cluster lights, fuse boxes, etc is that they often just need cleaning with a brass brush and/or a pencil eraser to scrub the contacts.
