Katrina: The 'faith based' hurricane
While the right wing press has adopted the position that George Bush is simply an indecisive buffoon at the mercy of incompetent subordinates, the real truth is that Bush's inaction for most of the first week of the hurricane was absolutely deliberate. Once agan, as in Iraq, Bush wished a rosy scenario, that the hurricane would give him a chance to show that his "faith based" "armies of compassion" led by "state and local governments" was the right and proper philosophy of governance of this nation. Again, as in Iraq, his fantasy dream scenario quickly turned into a nightmare, only this time instead of turning a war into catastrophe, Bush turned a catastrophe into a war. If ever we had a great example of the intellilectual bankruptcy of the "libertarian" view, this was it. Rather than assert federal jurisdiction when the levees, which are in fact the property of the US Government under the direct jurisdiction of the President, Bush choose to let thousands become starved, maimed or dead in an another attempt to impose the ludicrous governmental philosophies he and his supporters maintain are good for us.
