Aquatic Heat Exchanger
Well,
I decided to not use the tranny cooler and got the Aquatic Eco-Systems one. Thanks, BGKast. Here's kind of a stupid question. I need to cut a hole in the top of the aluminum marine tank I have and its had gas in it. I'm afraid to use a die grinder. I don't want to be given a Darwin Award, especially since they are given posthumously. Any ideas? Thanks, Brad Also, BGKast, in the photo of your HIH. How did you make the copper end? Thanks again, Brad |

I don't have any experience at this, but I believe that if you search around enough with yahoo/google and if you check www.biodiesel.infopop.cc you will find the answer. I seem to remember something about filling the tank with water before you cut. Maybe even having a hose overflowing it with water as you cut to keep it cool, put out the sparks, and most importantly keep air out of the tank. No air, no fuel air mixture, no explosion. Check around before you try it. Surely someone has lived to tell about what NOT to do... -Jim

WVO Tank Finished Pics
Here's some pics of the tank in the trunk of my 300D Turbo. Its an '87. I have a few questions for you guys. What Racor Housing are you using? Like a 645? Do I look at the flow rate to decide which one to use? Also, can I use the stock lift pump set-up and the WVO goes thru the Racor and the stock MB filter? Last question. I'm not sure where the lift pump goes in relation to the 3port (I have Greasecar ones) where the diesel and WVO go into. I hope to have this thing running this weekend. My neighbor has a Bar & Grill and has been delivering me about 15 gal a week. Can't get any better than WVO delivery.
Thanks, Brad |

Looks like you got the connections figured out. Sorry I missed that question.
I looked at the racors but they were too spendy so I bought a filter/filter head from an international truck on ebay. I would get a filter with roughly double the flow rate your engine operates at. I'm not sure how the 603 engine works, but on the 616/617 engines the fuel is pulled from the tank by the lift pump and pushed through the filter and to the injection pump. To use the 3 port valve you must rearrange things so that the filters for oil and diesel are before the valve and the lift pump pulls the fuel through the filters and valve, then pushes the fuel to the injection pump. Alternatively you can keep the stock layout and place the valve between the diesel filter and the injection pump. You would then use an electric fuel pump on the veg oil side and the stock lift pump would "deadhead" while running on veg oil. You should have a dedicated filter for the diesel and oil legs to keep purge times down.

Hey,
Thanks for the info. I think the 603 motor is set up just like you described the 616/617 motors. Tonite I'll go thru the book I have and make sure. I hope to get it finished this weekend. My neighbor left another cubie of oil on my step this afternoon. I have a simple set up to filter about 5gal at a time thru cloth filters, 25, 5 and 1 micron, but I have a 55 gal drum that I'm working on setting up with a hand pump thru a series of filters. Gotta get the car finished, first. Thanks again, Brad |
