Lovecraft warns against synthetic on older models.

Well now I'm a little confused. I've been reading on this forum that synthetic might be the latest and greatest for my 1984 300 SD . Slightly less oil changes, synthetic better for the engine etc. I'm ready to go and buy myself a case.
Enter Lovecraft conversion (specialize in MB conversion to veggie oil) website. I am researching to eventually go veggie oil. 2007 possibility. On the community forum one of the owners stated that starting to use synt oil on older MBZ will spring more oil leaks b/c the synt oil cleans out the crankcase from the crud that has formed a seal over the years, preventing oil leaks. Putting synt oil loosens the crud, leaving openings for oil leaks. Makes sense. Has anyone experienced this.
I just had an oil leak fixed so I'd happy the way things are. I don't want to deal with another one for at least 6 months! Doesn't that sound about right? heee heeee.

Heard that old wives tale so many times. I have switched cars in mid cycle and never had a problem.

I don't know about that but I do know that my 99 E300 has had synthetic oil since 55K and it has 115K on the clock. Whoops, better go check for that leak.

My 91 Firebird had natural oil and switched to synthetic. Oh, oh. That engine is going to leak.

My Powerstroke trans is switched to synthetic. Oh, oh. That is why it broke down. (Actually it was because in 01, Ford switched to a diode and soon after switched back because that diode was causing too many problems).

I switched to Delvac 1 from traditional on both of my MBs and the leak problems I had went away.

Still confused. Yup, you guys are no help at all
I don't think a 99 300 E qualifies as "an older model".
Ford is not quite the same as MBZ diesel. With all due respect, of course.
I think lovecraft was specific referring to MBZ but I might be wrong.

Thanks anyways.

switching to synthetic oil/trans fluid (AMSoil) was the single most noticable improvement have seen in my diesels yet;
seemed like the clock was turned back about a hundred thousand miles or so in overall performance.

My W123s do just fine with synthetic oil. If there are leaks they need to be fixed, not clogged up with sludge anyway.

BTW, you are taking advice from folks who advocate putting veggie oil in their engines.

Not yet. Still researching. I'm in phase 1, MPG on petro diesel.
Phase 2 will be started in November, MPG on biodiesel 50%.
Phase 3, if I make it this far, MIGHT be veggie oil in 2007. I bought the 1984 300 SD two weeks ago.
Do you know anyone with a veggie car? You got something against veggies?
Input, input.. . .
What kind of diesel motor oil do you put in yours?

I use Mobil 1 5W40 (assuming I can find it).

As soon as I see a piece of paper from MB saying it's OK to use veggie, I'll consider it.

Hmmmmmmmm, don't hold your breath.
BUT, on another thread about 10 days ago there was a guy from India commenting that MB is buying lots of farmland in India after successfully trialing the diesel E220 (CDI?) on plants crops that were processed into castor oil.
If I find the thread and guys name, I'll drop it in here.

uh oh just to confuse matters more!

I put Mobil 1 Synth ATF in my 722.303 and it stoped leaking! Also it operated much smoother. After some other work performed on the transmission (k1, vac adjust, bowden cable adj) the trans no longer flares !

I have 15w40 DELO in the 300SD
15w40 DELO in the 190E 2.6 (some people tell me that 15w40 is too thick for a gasser...thoughts?)

I have a veggie car . Nope I didn't buy the car to use veggie on it. I learned about veggie after I bought it.

http://biodiesel.infopop.cc is a great place for info. Read A LOT. It took me around 10 months of reading before I started using fresh sunflower oil on my '92 190D 2.5 turbo. So far everything is going fine. This yesterday I installed a flap plate heat exchanger, and injector line heaters to help with the approaching colder weather .

READ A LOT, AND KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING!

Good Luck!

p.s. as for oil I use Shell helix super 15w-40, but I might move to shell helix plus or ultra.
