It can happen when you brake into the fuel system with out a veg system. I replaced my lift pump gasket a while back and it took me an hour of pumping with the primer pump and pulling with a mityvac to get the system reprimed so the car would run. There are also plenty of post here of people having a really hard time repriming the system after changing filters. So...yes it can happen with the system the way Mercedes designed it.
