owned

diametricalbenz 03-23-2009 04:03 PM

Hooray! :D I hope the remaining owners just go buy B99.9.

Is that station in Brentwood still running or the place that sold out in MDR?

I wonder what happened. Collapsed internally from overexpansion into a niche market or management ran it into the ground....

Partyzeit!

I bet a whole lot of interest was lost after people actually got the system installed and it wrecked their car (and the truth spread), or they found it super hard to find veg oil due to way too many people on the prowl for it.

I bet a lot of the interest also disappeared when diesel fell to $2ish in the past several months. :D

PARTY ON...

I would say fuel prices played a part as well. I'm sure many people aren't running to 'convert' their cars or buy a diesel when gasoline is under $2.

tonkovich 03-23-2009 05:55 PM

yes, the location down the street from me (on sunset blvd in los angeles) closed down a while ago, and now has been sandblasted and renovated, no remaining evidence; i'm not a diesel owner/afficcianado, but i do respect the oilburners, and that place just seemed wrong from the day they opened. what did p.t. barnum, say,..suckers are dime a dozen, born every minute,...etc. this was just a hipster/flavor of the month thing. hallelujah.

Never really understood the motivation to convert to run on WVO. I could be wrong but seems to be more trouble than its worth. Any thoughts on this?

ah-kay 03-23-2009 06:36 PM

what kills a business is supply and demand. Diesel is $2 per gallon and the conversion is > $1000. The initial investment is too high, too much hassle to collect the oil, too much work to de-water and filter the wvo. All in all, it is not worth the investment and the hassle. It is like the sale of Prius is way down also. I bet my top dollars the interest will be there again that when diesel goes back up to $3-$5 range.

There are owners here who detest WVO but I am not one of them. I run my MBZ on WVO without any problems for over 20K each on my 300D and 300SDL.

I agree....its pointless. Especially in cold climates like ours. I can't imagine trying to heat a tank of WVO with coolant in the dead of winter....my engine can barely heat the inside of the car! :D You'd need like 70-100 amps worth of electrical heating equipment, and some huuuge alternator....that would sap several HP off the engine and wear out belts....yeah, not worth it.

I would, but they aren't worth the cost of a beer.

Just run a single tank conversion. Elsbett has been doing it for years! ;)
