Cheap Second fuel tank for W124 300D

I didn't want to spend $200 to $300 for an aftermarket fuel tank so I went to a wrecking yard and pulled a stock tank from a gas car. Using couplers and threaded rod I extended the existing tank mounts, welded a mount for my second tank and vilo, for less than $50 I have another 18 gallon tank with stock sending unit I wired so when I switch tanks my fuel gauge reads the tank I am running off of. The great things about the the W124 is they also have enough room in the fuel port area to add another port. I am in the process of doing this as well. I now have two stock tanks and can go nearly 1000 miles on WVO (in the summer) without filling up. No I just need a consistent supply of WVO. I get enough for free vacation travel but not daily use.

Pictures would be great, and what is a vilo?

Nice. Can you explain or share a picture of how the gauge switches senders at the same time as fuel switching? Did you use a single throw multi pole switch to change over 2 circuits with one switch?

This is an awesome feature and I have no idea why there is an indent for a second port.

Why only summer?

Where are you located? Are there not many restaurants/eateries where you are?

Share some pictures !

$200 to $300 is cheap but $50 is cheaper. I am getting pictures together this week to upload. Viola is what I meant. My grandfather use to say it a lot after explaining how something worked. I used an on/off switch with power through it to two SPDT relays. I have the fortune of having a sister-in-law and her husband who are electrical engineers. He came up with the plan. As for the second fuel port. To clarify. I am able to fill both tanks as you normally would, no need to open the trunk. Both are located at the same stock location, this is not quite done but I will have it together in about a week. I will post pictures. If you have a W124 you can see this next time you fill up. I only run in summer or long trips because though it all works well, I typically run short trips to work and back and found in the cold winters my car does better on blended or straight diesel. We also have a local biodiesel station that is less that dino diesel that I often run. I am in Southern Oregon. There are many restaurants and I do some collecting. I get enough to pay for vacation trips and our out of town trips, but I only drive about 500 miles a month other than that it is easier to just fill up once a month.

1991 350 SDL Conversion to WVO

I've put about 45k on this car since the conversion. I pull a small trailer on long trips that extends my range to about 4000 miles.

I love it. I have a tow hitch and will do the same if we go on any long road trips.
