is straining through cloth good enough?
a neighbor gave me a few 5 gallon jugs of cooking oil (used to cook turkeys). I thought I could burn it in my diesel. A few questions--
1. can I just strain the oil by pouring it through some old tshirts? I plan to pour them into buckets with old tshirts as strainers. is that good enough? 2. after I clean it of sediment, can I pour it into my diesel? will it ruin anything like the injection pump or gum up the fuel tank? 3. is this even a good idea considering how cheap fuel is? the car is running wonderfully well right now and I would hate myself if I ruined it with some hare-brained idea to burn veg oil. thanks guys

I would let it sit for 60 to 90 days. That settling should get you to 50 microns or so. You can buy a 1 micron nominal sock for around 5 bucks. Because it's Thanksgiving grease, it is probably already pretty clean to start with. I would invest in a sock and yes the straining should be OK.

thanks for the responses guys. based on what you have informed me of, this is not for me. too much trouble for $3 a gallon of diesel.
I have put an ad on cl for the veg oil. I will give it away

Burning WVO really only makes sense if you drive a lot and use WVO virtually exclusively. However, if you drive 20K or so a year, and get @ 25 MPG, then 800 gallons @ $2.20 per gallon = $1,700-ish is worth the hassle over the long run.

Remember 2008? $5/gallon diesel.

oh yes I do! I had a big 350sdl then and I would shock the fuel attendant when I would say....'I want $100 of fuel from pump 1". lol.

WVO made a lot of sense then ...

And it will inevitably again in the future. I'm holding on to my old WVO stuff until the time is right.

I would just filter it using t-shirt or a pair of jean. Blend 1 gallon, may be 2, per tank. Car should run just fine. You probably will find the car runs quieter with the wvo lubrication.
