VirginiaDude,

We're actually put something together to host a lady who does Biodiesel workshops wherein we learn the fine points of brewing up Biodiesel. Right now, the discussion is centered around doing something in Berlin (near OC) or Eastern Shore. I and one other guy have offered to host a workshop in Berlin where we would build a biodiesel refinery. I would offer the materials for building one (using an electric water heater, lots of plumbing, and a few tanks) and we would either host it at my place out there or another place near OC. I'll post info if anything firms up on it. THe primary player would be coming in from out of town - we would be providing the venue and some materials, basically whatever is needed.

- Ted

Count me in on any information seminar. I am definately interested in learning more about how to do this. I also know several restaurant owners who would work with me to get as much used oil as I need.

I am located in Silver Spring, but just don't have a place to do this as yet.

Anybody run this stuff in a diesel boat? Thats where a real savings could come in. Compare a mercedes burning 3 gallons an hour vs boats that burn 20 to 60 gph!

Update

good news has come down the grapevine.
a friend has just purchased an old airport shuttle to convert to a motorhome and we started talking about WVO and bio.
as it turns out, a farmer friend of hers inland already has a bio processor up and running.
however, he hasn't got his process perfected yet, so the three of us are going to pow-wow and work out the bugs.
one of their biggest hang-ups right now is what to do with the by-products (the methanol laden glycerine). we started to discuss reclamation of the methanol and the possibility of selling off the glycerine (dried flower makers apparently use it) or using it as a fuel source for heating the bio processor.
journeytoforever.org also had interesting info on the use of ethanol instead of methanol, this process is substantially more involved, but the benefit is that ethanol can be distilled more easily than methanol, thus cutting more of the cost.
anyhow, getting closer to production...

I'd be interested in the seminar too. Just starting to look into biodiesel/blends, so I have a bunch of reading & learning to do.

I don't know if anyone else has seen this site, but this guy in Northern Wales has a recipe for a type of bio-diesel that doesn't involve the nasty chemicals, and seems to require less cooking (energy) to make. http://www.bio-power.co.uk/makeit.htm
I'm thinking of messing around with this approach myself. If I come up with anything useful I'll post.

Cheers,
Peter

He has been discussed and cussed lol alots in the veg. world. Consensces is his stuff is just a blend and the wording of all his stuff is very decieving. Some have concerns about his wording could mean the fuel he/they sell will be thought of as "biodiesel" which it is not. If his stuff is not to good then it could give Bio-D a bad name.

Manufacturing biodiesel has always been rather daunting but adding filtered WVO to the tank seems pretty easy.
Question: HOW do you filter? WHERE do you get the filter elements?

Most common first step filter method is gravity; settling. After that the filter methods/tools used out there in vege land could fill as many books as the Harry Potter series. Many of the books would end up just about as wacky of a book too. Best to just read read read about "pre filtering" over at Maui Green Biodiese/SVO forums (Infopop)

Spoke to a guy at the National Biodiesel Board meeting this winter who runs sport fishing boats out of San Fransisco Bay and has been doing it for a few years. He says his boats get more customers `cause his trips aren`t hassled with stinky diesel fumes.

My partner is designing and about to build his personal skiff that will be powered by biodiesel using a small Kubota engine....looking to get 27 MPG.

cool.............I hope to get my research done soon so I feel confident enough decide what process I plan on using so I can build the appropriate plant.

With the Current prices it makes lots of sense to do. More than ever.

I just picked up some filter bags from McMaster-Carr...$3.91 each for 1, 5, and 10 micron bags, and it doesn't look like they charged for shipping by USPS. Hope to build a filter assembly for WVO to mix with diesel after work this week...I'll post photos if it works!
