i dont really know.

but i have looked under the hood on one once. some things looked very different from any other car i have seen.

and there is probably not a forum like this to turn to for help.

i think the basic quality is very good though.

If you have never worked on a Rolls Royce, and are not familiar, I do not reccommend the purchase of one. It is not a matter of how much it costs to fix, as the lady on the hood, demands that you spend every dime you own on it.They're very reliable vehicles, but very costly, and you absolutely have to find someone thats familiar with working on the vehicles, not to mention the vehicles take many special tools, and you need to own a set of british standard wrenches and tools.

Is all the chrome and stainless steel in good shape? That alone costs a fortune, but they're badass when they're fixed up right.

What is this? the forum of Lost Souls?they, like many expensive "well engineered cars"like the Aston Martin Lagonda were bought by people who could afford to have them gone over twice a year and to whom money was not an issue in that regard.

Had one, worked on a few..Citroen-based hydraulics, complicated triple circuit brakes that always need adjustment, why the parts alone for rebuilding the system were $3,200.00 and this was 10 years ago!

Let's rather not get into the suspension and the $elf leveling unit!!!

There are plenty of Shadows of the '72-'77 vintage around here in the $7,000-$12,000 range, the rubber seals all leak, leaving dry rot and a horrible musty odor inside, most other things are neglected as well.

In closing, every car has components that will,if neglected wear out and fail,it's simply that some are more complex and expensive than others.

It's a question you must answer yourself. Look through the RR Forumhttp://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/index.php If you find the problems their owners are having and can understand some of the components they are writing about - maybe a RR is your ticket. Love the car but I'm sticking with handling vacuum problems.

I LOVE Rolls-Royce and Bentley, however they can bankrupt the uninformed.
Study the vehicle you desire, educate yourself.
There are NO stupid questions, even if you think you know the correct answer, on Rolls-Royce and Bentley it is probably different.

A few prices to consider...
The rear axle half shafts are $2,000.00 USD each.
All wiring is British automotive standard code, this means don't allow unqualified others to touch it.
Rebuilding the front steering suspension can run $14,000.00 USD.
Repairing the hydraulic system averages $8,000.00 USD.
A rebuilt engine averages $28,000.00 plus shipping/handling/taxes/import fees.

If you are still seriously considering a Silver Shadow, you need the following data.
Please print this, and store it in a safe location.

Dug up from another one of your posts, in short no.

Rolls Royce are great cars, and there more sporty cousins Bentley.

Roy whats a good figure for yearly operating expenses on one? $10kish?

These cars look amazing and i've seen a few being run on a shoe string budget as wedding hire cars.

Providing nothing major breaks you may be ok (like owning a 6.3 or 6.9 really). These cars had a lot of leather and wood. So restoring one will get really expensive.

Best advice:
Join http://www.rroc.org/
Get on the forum and let them know you are looking for a nice daily driver.:)
You can not afford a Concourse quality ($100K +) car, and would not want to suffer the massive depreciation from driving it.

A nice daily driver Silver Cloud 2 will cost roughly $18,000.00 - $23,000.00 USD.

A nice daily driver Silver Shadow or Silver Shadow 2 will cost roughly $18,000.00 - $23,000.00 USD.

A cheap fixer upper Silver Shadow or Silver Shadow 2 will cost roughly $3,000.00 USD to buy, and approximately $28,000.00 to return it to a nice/safe daily driver.

A 1930 - 1958 Rolls-Royce or Bentley needing serious restoration ($60K) is roughly $8,000.00 to $30,000.00 USD depending upon vehicle history, with some in the 100/300 K range due to famous past owners.

Restoration of a 90% perfect daily driver to Concourse quality typically runs $68,000.00 - $80,000.00 USD per car.

Look at the pictures here for a definition of Nice.
http://www.rroc-mr.org/index.htm

Yearly operation for a good condition daily driver is identical with the top level vehicles of today.
Plan for $3K and save the difference in an insurance account for serious issues.

I would rather buy a Rolls-Royce or Bentley that has been driven, storage tends to wreck them.

OK unless you cashed out during the dot com boom you may want to re-think a rolls royce as a daily driver. Don't get me wrong it's a great second car and forgetting the expense of owning one for a second. How quickly do you think you can get parts for this car if it breaks?

Also, who are you going to get to work on this car? I'm in Atlanta and know only one Mechanic who worked at a Rolls Royce dealership in his day.

If your looking for a reliable , classy classic car you should really consider a Mercedes W108 car. The 280SEL is a really beautiful car and is well capable of keeping up with daily traffic. You can also walk into an advance order parts and get a bunch of service items for it either off the counter or on the next delivery truck.

WOW Whunter - I am impressed, like I just took a crash course in RR:D What do these cars ride, handle like?
A perfect Rolls-Royce or Bentley is the ultimate experience.
* It handles like a dream at two MPH through as fast as you can pay the ticket. :)
* The interior is pure luxury that never punishes you.
* All other drivers stare or wave.
* The pure ego trip of driving YOUR Rolls-Royce or Bentley.
* The joy struck endorphin rush (almost like the birth of your first child).

I work on them, and this requires test driving, many times people have come up to me at the gas pump making offers to buy the car. :)
One fellow followed me from Toledo, Ohio to Detroit, just to speak with the owner in person, to convince him to sell it. :D

:D OK, let me re-word that. After driving a 126 would I be impressed or disappointed:P
The W126 is a nice family car compared with a poor condition Rolls-Royce or Bentley.

You do not want my judgment of how it compares to a perfect condition Rolls-Royce or Bentley.

I own a 1985 W126 300SD.

After driving the Phantom and Bentley Continental GT, the realization struck me, the Phantom has Sinful LUXURY, elegance, and power, the Bentley Continental GT has POWER, handling, comfort, gadgets.
Combined, they cover the market.

I made a statement to a nationally prominent professional athlete who had driven a Maybach, and was considering buying one, go to the local RR dealer, get their demo for the weekend, you will never return the keys or the car... :D
He took the challenge, and forced them to sell him the demo Monday, when he refused to trade it for another. :D

Rolls-Royce is SPECIAL...
It is recognized around the world as the car of successful wealthy people.

A nice daily driver Silver Cloud 2 will cost roughly $18,000.00 - $23,000.00 USD.
.

Yeah, a local guy I know just sold a 1980 SCII that needed paint and cosmetic work for $17.5. 18K mi. It was black with camel interior and I think was mechanically ok.

Does it cost allot to keep a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow series II 1975 model? Its just that i found one to buy and just wondering if they brake down allot or are they reliable like the s-class?
thanks for your advice!!!

IMHO,
They are very durable cars, but they are fickle and parts cost a fortune. The brake system is very complex and expensive to repair. I know a fellow who bought a otherwise mint late '70s Shadow for 22k, and spent 6k in brake repairs when the low pressure warning light came on. The key is to find someone who knows these cars and buy the best one you can find. These people are a great source for spares, and they can ship to your door: http://www.albersrollsbentley.com/index.htm

A good one will make you carry a smile that's a mile wide, and a poor one will make you cry.

Well, anyway it was the brakes and $self-leveling systems that went first,as has been mentioned, horribly expensive.

Us guys in the shop had a simple test for the $elf-leveling system,we opened the trunk{boot,to youse purists}and had 2 or 3 heavy techs sit upon it,lowering it 6-9inches,we would start the car and if it didn't rise within minutes we knew there was trouble,if we were lucky it was a bad hydro pump that ran off the cam, most often it was uninformed owners or techs who poured brake fluid in the hydro reservoirs which absorbed water and deteriorated the parts in the high-pressure system, the R-R fluid being anhydrous, thus, total component replacement.

The triple circuit brakes were known as "rat traps"the master control being the most prohibitive and complex part,I'll scan a page from an old service manual I have, too, too complex.

I worked at a shop once that serviced a couple of Shodow models. I remember that one particular car would come in every few months, and the miles driven since the last visit were the exact total to and from the owners house.

BLIMEY! I have to add my 2 pence to this marvelous discussion of ROLLS-ROYCE and the rest of the automotive world.
I agree with what has been said completely! Excellent posts! That's why I love this site, informed people willing to truthfully discuss their experiences with RR, on The Best MB Site in the USA!
The best Dealer would be someone who also Services and Sells Beechcraft or Gulfstream Aircraft. A John Deere Dealer would also be good. Why? Because of the hydraulics and electronics involved in servicing and repairing these anachronisms of The British Empire. Remember that RR was a leading designer and manufacturer of Military and Commercial aircraft powerplants and their sub-systems, even after the Bankruptcy of the Aircraft Division, where Vickers Armaments Group, bought the Automotive Division from Her Majesty's Government. BMW currently owns RR, after the RR Name confusion with VW, which is still one of the strangest business transactions I have ever heard of.

There is nothing like a ROLLS-ROYCE, PERIOD!

If you have a serious and not a passing interest you will do what is required to keep her and you will enjoy and remember her the rest of your life! If not, you are in for an expensive and frustrating time. which no one needs! It's a way of life, really! From another era.

Your peace of mind will be severely tested, maybe defeated. Why? Where do you drive it, park it and when. You can't leave it ANYWHERE, without guarding it. Some Heathen will try to steal, damage, steal the flying lady mascot, if they haven't run into you or forced you off the road etc. Do you have your armed body guards along for the ride?

I am glad that I have had the priveledge and opportunity to own and drive these cars. They were an unexplicable part of my life. When people who were aquantances discovered my RR interests, they seemed to change and not always for the better. My involvement in the Clubs added a Social Element also, that surprised me to it's extent. This also happens to other Marques as well, but nothing like RR. I am telling you of these psychological factors that I was unaware of. :scholar:

This has been one of the best discussions that I read on RR Ownership.
Again my Brethren, I salute you! :beerchug:

The Silver Shadow is hardly one of their finest efforts. As such, it is an expensive boondoggle as a car to actually use. And it's not pretty enough, in the manner of a Phantom I or II, nor even a Bentley Continental, or even the "dry land gin palace" Corniche... to warrant its horrendous upkeep. This is speaking as someone who has been forced to work on 1970s RRs in a shop.

Rolls-Royce has a certain something, and a Bentley Turbo R or any of its turbo 6.75 litre descendants have a Blue Train kind of torque-monster, screw the aerodynamics kind of brute force panache, but a Silver Shadow is bested by its contemporaneous S-Class in any measure you might think of, in my not so humble opinion.

How does it *really* stack up next to a 6.3 or 6.9? The 1971 Shadow that I had a hand in the $10k worth of repairs to compared unfavorably with the W126 300SD I drove home at the end of those days...

Rob and my learned and respected Gentlemen;

I tend to agree with Rob, that in Modern Times, The Silver Shadow reflects waiting for something bad and expensive to happen! It still has the RR Spirit, but not the Passion of the Pre-War (Both WW I and II), When they really were the Best that could be made--To last for a lifetime. The Silver Ghost is the Spirit of RR and of The British People! It did achieve the excellence that Henry Royce, created for a motorcar.

WHunter, my excellent tutor on this site, showed us the extremes the RR has gone to in the Braking and Leveling Systems. The Hydraulic Spheres (Cannonballs) that have to be recharged periodically, can't do that at Pepboys or Walmart. Re-reading the manual on them scares me and what's left of my wallet! The complete set of Manuals for the RR SS is 6 or 7 Volumes. I don't recall if that includes the Electrical Manuals. They seem to do better if they are driven daily, like they are at the Peninsula Hotel in Hong Kong? There are many better machines!

Our MB's, Ferrari's, BMW's etc. have their own distinct personalities, but RR is it's own above the rest. It's place defined by it contribution in the Victory in the Wars and it's 100 + years of existence. It has survived time. That is it's past. With BMW purchasing it. RR is not that any longer, that era has finished! It may be a better machine today with BMW's input and money, but the RR of history ceased when production stopped at Crewe.

Quentin Willson's Picks "High Rollers" Top Gear 10/97 (UK)

Bentley T2

For: Huge Value, Huge Fun, Huge Thirst
Against: Huge Thirst, Huge Bills, lots of woof-woofs, a bit of a barge on corners

Still a class act, Not too dear to run if you find a tame specialist. Beautifully constructed and eternally fascinating. Service history paramount, never buy without. Dark colours flatter, Mason's black favourite. Mechanicals will outlast you. Shrewd selection is all, be very fussy

What to look for: Rotten wheel arches, sills, wings & rear quarter bumpers
ruined interiors, shabby timber, leaking suspension accumulators, corruption on top hat wishbones, ticking hydraulic tappets, duff electric seat/window motors, leaking PAS

Rolls Royce Silver Spirit

For: Value, breeding, politically incorrect
Against: A bit passe now, roly-poly handling, OPEC-Busting thirst

An uplifting drive that raises the odd eyebrow. Bentley Mulsanne in dark colors can be upspecced to Turbo R. Fuel injection and ABS after 86 and automatic ride control after 87. Four speed auto after 91. Quality mileage and provenance are all.

Avoid: light metallics, white, baggy high milers with no history, horrid interiors

What to look for: Ticking from top of engine, blue smoke, vandal scratches, creased seats, stained headlining, front tire wear, soggy suspension

Bentley Mulsanne

For: Pedigree, presence, panache
Against: Prodigous thirst, envy factor

Overall: Almost down to Silver Shadow Money. A softly spoken but speedy leviathian, the Mulsanne is one of the best value prestige cars. Long-life V8 and rust resistant body means most outlast owners. Mediaeval mechanicals, so njot too tragic to run as long as you bypass the cuff-linked dealer system.
83-85 turbos worth seeking out. Colour/history have big effect on values. ABS and injection after 86.

Avoid: Anything without history, tatty interiors, dated colours

What to look for: Signs of clocking, vandal damage, cam ticking, power steering leaks, duff shockers, pitted chrome, creased leather, warped brake discs

And time out for the Mercedes S class 126 fans:

For: Plutocrat image, hewn from stone, quality, space, comfort and authority
Against: Anesthetised feel, expensive to keep, depreciation becoming heavy

Overall: Wonderful value and still a class act. SEC saloons very sexy. Gentle restyle after 86. Later replacements cost mega bucks, so values firm. Blue-black and dark metallics look best. Leather and aircon desirable. Superb value if well bought- service history a must.

Avoid: 280/300 manuals, pimped up 500SECs. Thistle green, petrol blue, white, brown, ivory

Whagt to look for: timing chain rattle, low oil pressure, jerky autos, tired shockers, clocking, cracked windscreens

Corniche Convert: "CAR" magazine UK
For: Sails along
Against: Slack at the tiller
Sum Up: Dry Land Gin Palace

Guys, I can't leave this RR extavaganza alone! I also have a RR Corniche Convertible story, that shows the RR Spirit, if that's the correct term?

I was driving a 1968 RR Mulliner-Park Ward Drophead Coupe, White Body and British Parliament Green Leather Interior, this is pre-Corniche, by a couple of years, on S. State St. and S. University, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. This is at the Michigan Union Area, the heart of the University of Michigan Central Campus.

It was a fine early Fall, afternoon, I had the Top down and after having stopped at the 3-way Stop Sign, I begin to hear cheering and applause coming from one of the Fraternity Houses along S. State, and then another! What's happened? I thought it was the White / Green Colors of Big 10 Rival Michigan State Spartans, that I was driving, not the Maize and Blue of the University of Michigan Wolverines, that were appropropriate for the setting and location. :book: :scholar:

These guys are bowing-saluting me! I stopped and asked them why me??? What Happened??? They said, "It's the RR Convertible! You have made it!!! A SUCCESS IN BUSINESS!!! We humbly bow to you! This is TRUE!!!

This is the stuff of RR Legends, that I am refering to.:idea2:

i have often thought that an early 50s or late forties rolls or bently wouldnt be too bad to maintain. straight six, crank windows, drum brakes probably not assisted, probably manual windows and a stick tranny.

they have a solid front axle too.

i would love all that leather and wood inside.

what about it roy? would this be tough to keep on the road too?

I have heard of people starting the old '40s and '50s RR models "on the spark". Does this mean that they can be started by just turning on the ignition and the resulting spark ignited the fuel vapors and it just starts? Am I crazy? or can this really be done?

t walgamuth
10-05-2006, 11:43 PM
i think to find manual spark adjustment you would have to get back into the thirties at least, maybe the twenties.

it works, i am told. the way it works is the cars have incredible compression and virtually no leak down. so when you shut it off one cylinder will be sitting there with a compressed charge of combustable mixture. so you take the manual spark adjustment and swing it to the top then to the bottom. this will cause the compressed cylinder to fire and the engine starts up.

if they sit too long or the rings are worn it wont work, though.

a few weeks ago the elderly widow across the street died. her husband was a wealthy accountant. he got wealthy by being the accountant for national homes corp when they were all young back after ww2. the story goes that he sometimes had to take his pay in stock, then sold it when it was really worth a lot.

he was famous locally for buying the first rolls in town.

Hi Tom and John.

If I can add my knowledge on the subject?

Tom, after WWII, there was a shortage of everything in Europe and The UK too. Gasoline was scarce and expensive. RR/Bentley sold a compact size to us, car. These had the improvements like independent front suspension and servo/mechanical assisted brakes. They are good driving cars. The Silver Cloud series are what most people think of when RRs are discussed. The SCI, II, III are basically the same car with a 5L-300cid Inline 6 cylinder engine, and the later series have the V8s. My favorite was the SC I to drive and OWN! Because of their less complication. RR's are never simple! Tom, as you can see I can talk forever on these cars.

John, Lot's of the early cars could be started on the "spark". The Silver Ghosts were easy to start when the engine was up to operating temperature and not too much leakdown of the mixture had occured. A battery-coil ignition was needed, but it could be fired on a magneto, if you are lucky! I used to do it with the Ghost and also a 1919 Cadillac V8--57 Touring Car, like General Pershing used during WW I. You could tell the condition of your engine by doing this. Leaking compression, you couldn't do this.

I see you guys were talking to each other on the site as I was slowly typing this out, you got the facts right! Click click...BANG! Sometimes! :) :idea2:

so are the late forties early fifties simpler to maintian than the later cars?

or just as complicated in different ways?

Tom, they were simpler because the high tech stuff and expensive parts, wasn't really incorporated until the Silver Shadows and they were sold form 1966 on... The Mid-50's Clouds and the Ghosts as well as some of the others too, are the ones to keep for a lifetime! The new ones maybe fine too, but, it takes a lot more money and the depreciation will kill your bank acct.
RR would purchase a new Buick Roadmaster Limited from GM, in the 1930's to study it's design and incorporate any usable ideas into RR Motorcars. It was Buick who RR considered a Benchmark, look at the design of the Clouds. I'm sure Cadillac was involved and MB, too.

The earlier post-war Clouds and Wraiths, have their own baileywicks! That's a RR word.:laugh2:
Albers Rolls-Royce in N. Indiana, near you I think, would be a great place to spend an afternoon, to learn all about this. It really is another world. :book: :scholar:

Tom, Anything n the Mid-50's is going to have GM's Dual Range HydraMatic Tranmission = 4 speeds in an automatic transmission. The HydraMatic Factory was 15 min from my home in Ann Arbor. I have toured it a few times and have friends who worked there on the assembly line and in the Prototype Shop as well as Engineering and the Auditing Dept.--Bean Counters. The RR model was blue-printed from GM. It was and is I think a great transmission for what it was designed for, Heavy Luxury Cars. RR took them apart and did some more work on them to meet their requirements, the mechanical servo on the tail, etc. That is where some of the trouble began. I have found them to be as trouble free and smooth as a TH 400. If they have been serviced and used correctly, which means just drive them and change the ATF Fluid and Filter, they used Sperm Whale Oil in the Dextron, in those days and it may have been a lifetime fluid for normal use, in those days-not now with the ATF changed. Like anything else if it's been taken care of it will be OK. :)

t walgamuth
10-07-2006, 12:03 AM
so in the early fifties you might get a stick?

yeah, they did use gm trannies. also the newer ones used i think what was a close copy of a chebby 366 motor with the block cast in aluminum, iirc.

also in the last two years or so i read that the benz tranny with the four speeds made from the fifites thru ninties was built after the benz engineers had closely studied the gm hydormatic.

before reading that i had always felt that the way the benzes shifted felt an awful lot like my 52 and 53 caddies. (with hydromatics).

thanks guys.

i have often thought that an early 50s or late forties rolls or bently wouldnt be too bad to maintain. straight six, crank windows, drum brakes probably not assisted, probably manual windows and a stick tranny.

they have a solid front axle too.

i would love all that leather and wood inside.

what about it roy? would this be tough to keep on the road too?

Very easy, with the correct tools.

I had been told that Mr. Albers at the dealership in Indiana had some VIN's memorized, so if a shop called for a part on so-and-so's car, he already had the VIN in his head...that would have been 20+ years ago, though.

My take, as a non-RR owner and a novice, is that they are flashy and ostentatious, but not necessarily all that well built, especially in the 70's and beyond...sort of like Cadillac was "The Standard of the World", RR is a "Proper Motor Car", even though their rivals were far more advanced technologically.

WHAT A GREAT SITE!!!

ROLLS-ROYCE will be attempting a Land Speed Record, this coming year!
A modern times challenge! With BMW, owning RR, these days, that's quite a challenge for them!

RR Aero Engines, a completely different Company than RR-BMW Motorcar Corporation, powered the vehicle that broke the Speed of Sound, a few years ago. And now RR, the Car Company, will try to best the 400+ mph record for Driven Wheel Vehicles.

Seems like ROLLS-ROYCE, is waking up and may be flexing it's new BMW Muscles. I'll try to find some direct references and articles on this and post them, if I can. I think it's possible that RR, will own 2 LSR's, but from 2 different RR's!!! FASCINATING!

Cheers Everybody!

For me the Rolls overall design look absolutly horrible. Maybe it has a spirit and a special feeling attached to it (beside the fact that you're driving the most expensive car in town) but when you see that boxy car / interior your eyes will tell you that something is just not right.

Mercedes and, especially, W126 designs are truly timeless, wonderfully balanced and a lot more enjoyable in many aspects. I just took mine to a steep mountain drive and it behaved admirably. Never will dare that with a Rolls. Cars are meant to be driven, not kept in a ball of glass.

There was a great article in Car & Driver about 15 years ago about a RR shop in the mid-West. I'm guessing this was it.

I remember that the owner made sure that the screws in all the electrical switchplates (in the shop) were all turned the same way. I think 12:00 & 6:00 (so that any moisture that got in would drip down).

I'd guess you'd want your RR maintained by an obsessive compulsive, assuming you had the $$$$.

Please don't tell anyone, but there was a time when Mistress dreamed of owning a RR Silver Shadow, waxbean yellow exterior, camel interior with a rag top....I know, in the time out corner..

Well, considering your less-than-stellar parking abilities, perhaps it's just as well you didn't close the deal:

I remember one gentleman who keep his boat at MBW that had more money than God and would park his S500 in some strange places. My favorite was with the bumper smashed up against a wood wall blocking half the driveway at the marina.:D He would just turn it off and get out wherever he wanted.

My late great-grandfather was like that, sans the more money than God part, with his Cadillac. Although he stopped obeying traffic lights and stop signs that were installed after the 70's so there may have been a bit more going on there :)

That driver's side window would probably cost you $5K to fix. Although it would be pretty funny to see a RR with a piece of plastic duct-taped over the window :D

They really are beautifully styled cars. I'm not a fan of the taco meat color, though.

Gentlemen!

We are talking about Rolls-Royce Motorcars here! :laugh3:

If you really want to own a RR, you are going to have to learn about their peculiarities and characteristics, and get aquainted with the Snap-On Tool man, he does deliver to your home inthose nice big trucks, that have EVERYTHING! You will become a proficient mechanic, in many fields, electrical, mechanical, coachwork and woodworking and fine cabinetry, and lets not forget custom painting! I have known executives who have never done anything more than an oil change in their life, become expert RR Techs and one a Certified Welder, also! I forgot to mention the LUCAS electrics, but some used Bosch, later on.

That rear window will stop to function if yopu don't use them frequently. There was a set of points relaythat would corrode and I would have to take the window and track out of the door, and clean and lubricate them, when this occured. It wasn't too bad as the engineers had made a concession for this. But then, there are other things that are impossible to fathom!

They are rather labor intensive car. But there is NOTHING else on the road like them! I don't know how the BMW ownership will change their parts situation for the older cars? I hope that they will still support them. :book:

Fred and Hattie,

I forgot to mention about the $money, big $money! That's why you need to have the funds and time to maintain and repair them. Your expertise will save you $$$$$$.

Fred, I haven't worked on any late 80's RR's. A few friends have owned them and they were happy with them. They seem to be better, more modern, but not cutting edge like M-B or BMW. Lexus and Ferrari, are a different breed of Cat. I don't believe our friends the Japanese, could build a car such as the RR. It's a Cultural Phenomenon, that could only be born, and evolve from the British Empire!

To really educate yourself on these unique machines, born from Historical Antiquity, join The Rolls-Royce Owners Club. That is the BEST advice, I can tell you. You need to learn what you are getting into, and then you can enjoy the car and it's AURA, which is what a RR, is really about.

Remember the quote that there is nothing more expensive than a cheap Mercedes or Ferrari. With the Rolls-Royce, you just went Nuclear! You must have the maintainence records and history and ownership, of the car. A PPI, by a RR specialist, for that particular era of RR, is first thing, for you to do. It's like WAR, there is no experience like it! Ultimate Victory is Survival. Just have your eyes wide open, when you go to buy a Rolls-Royce Motorcar.

A cheap RR is not.

As mentioned in our phone discussion:

RE: A Silver Shadow that has failed to proceed, and been abandoned in a garage for twenty years (will not move or crank).

My best estimate RE: cost to make it safe to drive, and make everything function again.

#1. Engine/transmission mechanical, fuel system and ignition system.
$3,000.00 - $48,000.00

#2. Hydraulic system, Brakes, suspension and steering.
$7,000.00 - $22,000,00

#3. Body electrical, excluding climate control.
$200.00 - $11,000.00

#4. Climate control.
$300.00 - $9,800.00

#5. Body damage, paint, ever-flex top and/or interior restoration.
$3,000.00 - $78,000.00

When I was a kid, my neighbor used to work on all kinds of exotic cars. He got a mid-60's Rolls Royce in for repairs from time to time. The wood and leather in the interior were gorgeous. The rest of the car was total crap. Handled like a dump truck. The power windows wouldn't remain tightly shut, so there was a constant whistle going down the road. Broke down frequently. I had a 65 Coupe de Ville at the time. It was 10 times the car that Rolls was.

Just came upon this thread (for obvious reasons). In the early '80s I was a mechanic in a high-end repair shop. The shop did lots of Rolls work, I was lucky enough to get the BMWs, Jags, MBs, Ferraris, Maseratis, an occasional Lambo, and some oddball stuff here and there instead. My work on RRs was usually in the role of helping another mechanic who was working on one. One time I answered the phone, it was one of our RR parts suppliers calling in with a quote for a Silver Shadow ignition switch. When he said "ten fifty-two" I thought that was surprisingly reasonable... maybe it was just a standard Lucas ignition switch... but he quickly followed it with "sixty-eight." Meaning the ignition switch was $1052.68. And this was 1981 0r 1982!

The cars smelled great inside, if the car had a window open you could smell the leather from across the parking lot. Plush wool carpets. Gorgeous wood, fit and finish. Felt you were driving around in your living room (well, not MY living room, but you get the idea!) Brakes felt bizarre because of the high pressure hydraulics... virtually no pedal travel whatsoever, totally different than any other car, but easy to get used to. Nice electric shift of the GM (!) automatic transmission. Never really liked the way they felt to drive, but I was a young guy who liked things a lot more sporty. Actually, I drove a Corniche with the top down one day... I could get used to that one.

Well, I've just bought one on a whim.....1980 Shadow II with 52,000 genuine miles on the clock.

Its GOLD!!....actually looks better in the flesh than it sounds.

Drives great. Everything seems to work accept the air-con, although it has been converted to run on current R134? and i've spotted a pipe that's come adrift in the engine bay, so thats the likely reason for the lack of cooling air.

Just also been looking through the paperwork that came with the car and it was originally owned by some obscure Prince, which probably explains the gold paint :P

Can highly recommend Flying Spares for new and used parts.
