The line will be where you ended up painting, not your tape edge. Unless you do the whole panel, the paint line will probably show. You could try melting the edge with a strong reducer, but we're getting into pretty technical territory. A good painter can get himself out of trouble as quick as he got into it.

If you are painting the 79 240 that is beige (I assume you are), you probably shouldn't clear it. These cars didn't have a clear coat unless they were ordered with metallic paint. The flat "standard" colors did not recieve a clear out of the factory.

Thanks for all of the help. I think I will try painting the rust repair behind the rear wheel first. If it does not turn out well, at least it is not very visible. I will let you know how it goes. -Bryan
