W123 Lower Fender/Rocker Trim Install

I have an 85 300D, of which the 8 or 10 inche trim on the bottom of the front fender (with the rubber and chrome strip) came off. I replaced the three white clips that held on the old one, but how do you get the darn thing back on the car?

My friend said I was supposed to install the white clips into the moulding first, but that whould have been impossible, since the clips had pins that had to be pushed in...

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi. Make sure that the metal strip inside the trim is straight, not bent in. Engage the top side of the strip with the top side of each clip and bump it with the heel of your hand, repeat for each clip. You can also use a piece of wood or a balled up rag and a hammer. The only thing you have to watch out for is if the panel is rusted it will deform when you push on it and the clip will push away from the trim and not engage. If you do have rust and you are not going to fix it now (not recommended), you can remove the splash panel and that will give you access to behind the panel, you can improvise a backer to stiffen up the panel while you hit the trim piece.
