W123 Hood Hinge Bracket
Anybody have any experience repairing the inner quarter-panel after the lower hood hinge bracket stud's pulled through? The bracket itself is intact..... it just pulled through on the driver's side.
I thought of making a doubler-plate & bolting it to the inner panel, but I've never seen it done there. I'd like to avoid replacing the whole quarter-panel just to get the hood working again. Hoping somebody has a simpler solution.

If I understand the problem, you can probably fix it by cutting the bad area out and welding a new plate in there.

I'd like to see how you solve your problem. Mine seems a little wobbly, too. I haven't had time to look at it very closely yet.

Eventually, invariably, I'll sell the car and THAT is when I usually get to cross off items on the list. Of course, I also end up with a bunch of small oddball parts and scratching my head say,"Hmmm, I wonder what this is for?" Now THIS spring I am definitely converting my 280C to fuel injection. Well, after I get done with changing the hood on my wife's 250C and getting the A/C working in my 280 and changing out the front sub-frame on my project car and ......... |

I think that "spring" projects refers to getting (i.e. "springing into) to work . . . At least that's what it means to me. They frequently extend well into Fall and Winter.

First of all use some real heat to get the seized pin out of the bushing. . Then fabricate something in very close quarters. I found it to be a miserable small job unless one took off the fender. I did not.
Make sure to lubricate the other side as you will not want to ever do this again. The pivot pins are almost invisible but once you have repaired one of these my guess is you will never forget to oil them occasionally. The original cause is not structual weakness. Seems the pin just rusts solid to a dry bushing. When you open the hood the bushing just rotates with the pin and tears out of the sheet metal. Or at least that was my experience. |

Thanks for the warning, Barry. I'd better go lube mine good.
