Better off going to a shop, the dealer is going to charge you $105 an hour to weld a new perch on.

The frame rail is thin to begin with, 1/16", and grinding it makes it even thinner. How much thinner? Depends on the severity of the rust.

MB makes this part (see attached pic of driver's side) with the perch already riveted onto a section of frame rail. You can see just how thin that rail is in the second pic. I like the part, just my opinion.

nhdoc, glad to hear that the failure was not too dangerous and u got it fixed

I had this conversation with them when getting parts for my transmission, as long as it's MB, it doesn't matter how old it is.

In either case, I was thinking about getting the one perch repaired properly, and getting the dealer to do it. As old as this car is, there is too much life in it for it to be dead.

While I think it is admirable to repair it properly, I suspect in this instance that the MB dealer would send it out to a local body shop they trust to actually do the work. I would ask them who they use and go their directly personally.

This is what usually happens with the W210 perches.

Willy - I've not seen that part before. Is nice to know it exists for folks whose perch cancer went too far before being discovered. Shows how poor MB's undercoating really was for use in the snow/coastal areas. That piece will still need to be riveted in I suspect as the entire body is uni-body construction. There is no "frame" in the classic sense in that area. Just spot welded sheet metal structural members. Its not like they're going to cut that whole piece out and weld a new one in.
