Is etch primer really necessary if you are shooting primer immediately after exposing the metal? Is it highly advised in areas that previously had rust?
I am thinking of shooting a high build primer. Am I going to want to dry sand, wet sand, or both? Can I dry sand the first couple of coats and then wet sand the final coat? And again, what grits would you guys recommend for this task? Can I use the DA for the dry sanding the primer or do I should I use a sanding block?

80 grit and machine down to the rust,,all by hand after that,, start with 220 ,go to 320 wet,, finer grits wet, until final coat then 1500 wet for finla.Your primer will show you any imperfections. It all depends on how much time you want to invest. I do not have the patience for all the work involved..takes too long to see the end result. Have found that after down to bare metal, using a hand torch on the area removes all the moisture from the metal, just be carefull not to get it too hot(willdistort) and use about 15 coats of primer, letting them dry thouruoghly betweenn coats will keep any rust from coming back. That is ,if you cannot afford por-15. it is the best way to go,but it is pricey..$40.00 bucks for a pint. Take your time.
