It is the Sportline edition if that matters. What would be the best speakers to buy for it?

for the dash 4 inch coax and for the rear deck 6.5 in coax with a low profile tweeter.

Are any modifcations required to fit the 6.5 inch speakers in the rear deck?

For the W201's, 6.5" round speakers will fit in the rear deck (hat rack) with just enlargement of the speaker opening. Assuming no unusual depth or magnet size on the speakers, no metal cutting is involved. The deck is reinforced fiberboard and the hole can be enlarged with a sharp utility knife. While it can be done with the deck in the car, I would strongly recommend that it be removed to do the trimming, since it will be neater and because of the rear window, it's a tight fit towards the back. I would also stress that you test fit the speaker grill so that it does clear the rear window.
