'85 300TD Rear Speaker Sizes?

I have an '85 300TD and want to replace the rear speakers (stock ones in the headliner near the rear gate).

Does anyone know what size they are? 4 inch or 6 1/2 inch?

Thanks,

Tom

Well,I do not know if this will be of very much help to you, but my 82 300D uses 5 1/4 inch speakers in the back. I don't know if it's the same on the wagon though.

You can also always cut out the whole to fit whatever you want.

The problem with the TD is the small space allowed in the roof area will not let a speaker any larger to fit. I looked at cutting but figured it would not help, even a larger speaker there will not add significantly to the quality of the sound that comes off downwards firing speakers in a space that doesn't allow any bass respose.
I solved that problem by adding satellite speakers driven off a small (A/D/S) amplifier, the "plate amp" variety that fits under the floorboard area (if your car has the third seat this obviously won't work) - I use a Pioneer receiver with a 12-cd player mounted in the back on one wall near the spare tire.
I used two small monitor speakers, there are lots of them available for home theater use, and the sound is completely awesome with the 25 W/chan amp, it will even thump if you want to make it a pimper.
I left the tinny MB speakers in place, as I have to remove the monitors if I need the cargo space. The monitors have to be tied down BTW otherwise they will wind up flying across car when you turn and brake, BTDT.

Thanks for the replies. I'm in NYC want to keep the speakers in the stock location. Can was broken into last month and the stereo was stolen.

Is the size 5 1/4? Just want to confirm. Thx,

Tom

I replaced mine some time ago and don't remember the size, sorry. I do recall that the depth is an issue too so I'd recommend you remove the old speaker to measure to be sure you have enough room. IIRC I couldn't get as good an upgrade as I wanted because I could only find one speaker that would fit. That was a few years ago so you may have more choices now. Dieseldiehard is right though, the upgrade to the rears made very little difference, the bulk of the benefit came from the fronts where there was more room to play around with the sizes. Wagons in general aren't the best accoustic platforms so don't waste too much $$ on this unless you're really into it. (In which case you may want a sedan)

Depth is indeed an issue. I think I found only one pair of speakers on all of crutchfield's or cartoys' web sites that would fit my car.

I was taking the last parts that I could off of the parts car and I looked at the rear speakers. Definately not 5 1/4". More like 4". I would try Crutchfield for the size. I would have taken the two from the parts car but the suspension was torn.

Well with a wagon you have room for 4 15" subs is a big box...and get heart stopping bass.

Here's an idea:

Take a tape measure and measure them.
