New stereo install questions.
Hey there, I'm about to set off into installing a new HU in my '82 240D and I have a question. I can only lay fingers on 2 speaker wire pairs. They're cut and behind the dash. Are there 2 more pairs down in there somewhere, or does the stock setup only use 2? If it only uses 2, and I'm installing a 4x50W HU, how should I wire it? Run all new speaker wires? just use 2 channels and enjoy the non-blown-ness of the stock speakers, until I get tired of poor sound? Any help is appreciated! Thanks a ton!
Ash

i believe the stock runs it in a different Impedence, the stock speakers are 8 ohm. on the 300SD you will have to bybass the fader. which means you might as well rewire all 4 wires yourself.

I used KISS on my 240D HU
Keep
It Simple Stupid Is my mantra. Disconnect the battery first!!!!!!! Well, before you disconnect the battery you may want to pull the existing radio out and do a little exploring with your multi-tester so you can identify the wire(s) that are: 1. always hot, for the radio memory. 2. hot with key-on for the radio, antenna, etc. Then, disconnect the battery first!!!!!! I recently installed a Blaupunkt Montreal HU in my ’82 240 D, replacing the original Becker cassette. No wiring was previously molested and I think that made the job easier. I just used the two existing "speaker" wires, which actually go to the fader, and connected them to the HU front output. Taped off the HU rear output leads and left them as unused. Original set-up on everything else, including the speakers. Set the HU to full front (no rear/fader) and use the existing fader wheel to control that. Everything worked, including the antenna and I am happy with the set up. I just wanted a serviceable unit that could play CD’s and more or less fit the character of the car, as opposed to looking like a little bit of Las Vegas in my dash, and I’m happy. I don’t think that a high end, high quality sound system is very compatible with the “ambient sounds” common to the 240D while it is running. BTW I got the unit from Crutchfield and it came with excellent, but not wholly accurate, directions for the MB. It did include the proper harness/connectors and DIN sleeve/cover thingy and was easy to understand. I would buy from them again. Total was around $100, with a rebate they were offering at the time. Maybe two hours from start to finish. Good luck
